The Silver Medal is awarded annually to one student at each of the state’s engineering colleges. Chastain was chosen from a field of eight nominees put forth by the departments in the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering.
On that last day of the trip to Peru, Rose McVaney heard a woman scream and saw a rip tide was quickly carrying a man, woman and young girl out to sea. The man was desperately trying to carry the other two on his back, swimming furiously toward the shore.
A dozen CSU engineering students and their professor traveled to Peru earlier this year as part of a course on sustainable engineering.
