Tony Maciejewski, professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Colorado State University, has received the 2023 Distinguished Educator Award from the ECE Division of the American Society for Engineering Education, or ASEE.

The award is given annually to an individual for significant contributions to ECE education.

Maciejewski, former ECE department head, received the honor for his leadership of CSU’s Revolutionizing Engineering Departments grant, known as RED, from the National Science Foundation. The RED program was launched in 2015 to elicit radical changes to the way engineering is taught across the country.

“This award is a nod to Tony’s vision and commitment to ECE education,” said Edwin Chong, ECE Department Head. “His ideas have paved the way to a more inclusive, collaborative, and creative learning environment in our department.”

As the first ECE department in the United States to receive a RED grant, the five-year project garnered national recognition for its novel approaches to teaching and learning, including Public Sector Project of the Year from the National Society of Professional Engineers – Colorado Chapter and Innovative Program of the Year from the ECE Department Heads Association, or ECEDHA.

Earlier this year, Maciejewski was named director of the NSF’s Division of Electrical, Communications, and Cyber Systems. The new leadership position allows him to serve a temporary term with the NSF while maintaining his research program at CSU.

Maciejewski is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association. He served as president of ECEDHA in 2018-2019, and he is a recipient of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Distinguished Service Award.
