The Fort Collins community and prospective students are invited to join the RoboRam Cup, the latest mechanical engineering competition, on Saturday, April 27. The competition showcases soccer-playing robots built by second-year students.

In the fall, Sam Bechara’s MECH 202: Engineering Design II class made a splash with class competition Doll’d Up Nautical Knockdown: Where Fashion Meets Splashin’. Engineering students designed and constructed mechanized boats to battle their classmates in an above-ground pool in the Suzanne and Walter Scott, Jr. Bioengineering Building.

A crowd of people cheer on and record a miniature boat battle in a raised indoor pool. One of the boats sprays water at the other.
Two model-sized boats spray water at each other in an above-ground pool as members of the CSU community look on.

This semester, the competition is back, and larger than before at Moby Arena on the CSU Fort Collins campus.

Techie Tackles and Turbo-Goals: The Inaugural RoboRam Cup is a culmination of student innovation and creativity in MECH 202: Engineering Design II. Teams of students have been tasked with engineering remote-controlled cars capable of playing soccer.

In single-elimination tournament style competition, students will play their classmates with their “robo-cars” in a two-on-two soccer game. Whichever team scores the most goals in a two-minute period will advance to the next round to battle another team.

The event will be hosted in Moby Arena, and the main competition begins at 1 p.m. The event is family friendly and open to the public. Free parking is available outside Moby Arena in lot 195.

For those that can’t attend in person, the competition will also be live-streamed on Twitch.
