VIDEO: Testing for methane at a model facility

Did you know? Colorado State University’s Energy Institute operates a one-of-a-kind methane emissions testing facility near the Foothills Campus. It’s called METEC – Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Center.

At METEC, researchers field test low-cost methane sensing technologies and evaluate their performance. Such systems can help find and reduce leaks of methane – the primary component of natural gas – anywhere from the natural gas well pad to its distribution networks. The goal: more efficient use of domestic natural gas resources, as well as minimizing greenhouse gas impacts from the natural gas system.

METEC is a $3.5 million facility, comprising real natural gas equipment, and is funded by the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy.
